Setting up a Start-up while doing PHD in Germany?

Frage

I am doing PHD in Germany. Basically I am a Non-EU, but I am getting salary of TVÖD 13/2. As I am dealing with data analysis and doing PHD in Bioinformatics. So is it possible that along with my PHD I can open a data analysis/Bioinformatical data management and analysis company in Germany? Can I be able to update my residence permit status for starting such a company? Is there any minimum requirements?

Antwort

In general, any entrepreneur who wishes to start a business in Germany may do so, irrespective of nationality or place of residence. There is no specific investment legislation in Germany, nor is there a minimum percentage of German shareholdings required for foreign investments within Germany. Non-EU citizens will have to make sure to have the appropriate type of visa. Generally, visas are obtained in the investor\'s home country at a German embassy or consulate. Decisive for the appropriate type of visa are the length and purpose of the stay in Germany. Depending on the intended business activities in Germany, different types of visas are relevant to entrepreneurs.

With regard to the actual formation procedure, the local Chamber of Industry and Commerce (IHK) in the city of your choice is the first point of contact when intending to start your business in Germany. In an individual meeting, the IHK will be able to advise you on the required licenses, visa regulations, and so-called welcome packages that are available in the area.
